NOTICE OF DEADLINE FOR FILING NOMINATING PETITIONS FOR THE PRIMARY ELECTION AND FOR FILING INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE PETITIONS
The deadline for filing nominating petitions for the primary election is March 31, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. central time. If a petition is mailed by registered mail by March 31, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. central time, it is considered filed.
The deadline for filing nominating petitions to run as an independent candidate in the general election is April 28, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. central time. If a petition is mailed by registered mail by April 28, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. central time, it is considered filed. For the offices of Miner County Commissioners, Miner County Auditor, Miner County Register of Deeds, and Miner County Sheriff, nominating petitions must be filed in the office of the Miner County Auditor, 401 N. Main Street, Howard, SD 57349, and nominating petitions for the offices of U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, Governor, State Senator–Districts 8 & 20, State Representative-Districts 8 & 20, Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Auditor, State Treasurer, Commissioner of School and Public Lands, and Public Utilities Commissioner must be filed in the Office of the Secretary of State, State Capitol Building, Pierre, SD 57501.
Nominating petitions for the offices of Miner County Commissioners, Miner County Auditor, Miner County Register of Deeds, Miner County Sheriff, Precinct Committeeman and Committeewoman, and Republican Delegates to the State Convention must be filed in the office of the county auditor during regular business hours. Nominating petitions for the offices of U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, Governor, State Senator–Districts 8 & 20, State Representative-Districts 8 & 20, Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Auditor, State Treasurer, Commissioner of School and Public Lands, Public Utilities Commissioner, and Vermillion Basin Water Development District Director-Area 7 must be filed in the Office of the Secretary of State, State Capitol Building, Pierre, SD 57501, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. central time.

SECRETARY OF STATE MONAE L. JOHNSON ANNOUNCES CANDIDATES MAY BEGIN CIRCULATING PETITIONS FOR THE 2026 PRIMARY ELECTION

The South Dakota Secretary of State’s Office reminds individuals interested in running for public office in the 2026 primary election that candidate petitions may begin circulating on January 1, 2026.
Candidates seeking placement on the 2026 primary ballot must file their completed nominating petitions with the Secretary of State’s Office no later than March 31, 2026, by 5:00 p.m. CT.
Petition forms and filing requirements are available on the Secretary of State’s website at sdsos.gov. Candidates are encouraged to review the requirements carefully to ensure compliance with South Dakota election laws.
All public hearings are scheduled for the basement of the Miner County Courthouse, which is not handicap-accessible. Persons needing assistance should contact the County Auditor at 605-772-4671 at least 24 hours prior to any hearing to arrange accommodations.
